Fashion shows aren't always directly applicable to your everyday style, but that doesn't mean you can't glean some inspiration and make them your own. We've spotted ten winter trends you can try; ones that are surprisingly practical during the colder months. From extra long sleeves to the return of the once-vilified legging, here's what we're wearing to stay warm (but look cool) this winter.
SKI JACKETS
The waxed ski jacket made its way from the slopes to the runway thanks to the purveyor of cool, Balenciaga's Demna Gvasalia. Whip out your own North Face or Roxy coats and style them with slacks and heels for the office.
EXTRA-LONG SLEEVES
Who needs cold-weather accessories when your sleeves extend past your fingers? Rihanna-approved (seen here at her Fenty x Puma runway debut) extra-long sleeves are the perfect alternative to gloves. No more fumbling when you receive an incoming call—all you have to do is wiggle out your hand!
PUFFER COATS
As an avid Patagonia fan, I am thrilled to announce that puffer jackets are finally cool. But more than just down feathers and high-tech insulation, this season's styles vary from flashy (like this metallic number from Vivenne Westwood) to feathery. Top an LBD with a puffer jacket for a chic but cozy night out.
TURTLENECKS UNDER DRESSES
Instead of packing away your summer dresses, layer them with a knit turtleneck like Tory Burch did here, and voila! You've doubled your winter wardrobe.
PLATFORM BOOTS
Keep your feet high and dry with '90s inspired platforms. These cheetah boots by Maison Margiela would make the Spice Girls proud, while patent leather versions can handle stomping through slushy streets
TROOPER HATS
YOU DON'T HAVE to sport the oversized Ushankas seen at Louis Vuitton, but keep in mind that trooper hats are a wintry lifesaver. The furry ear flaps are far superior to knit beanies, keeping your ears warm all season long.
NAVY OVERCOATS
Last winter, we were obsessed with the camel coat. It was an easy piece that matched denim, evening wear, and everything in between. And though we're still in love with them, we think the neutral-outerwear has met its match with this season's Navy-inspired overcoat. As seen at Coach, the gold-buttoned coat is just as versatile, but a bit more dramatic.
PATENT TRENCH COATS
For unseasonably warm winter days (too cold for a jacket, too hot for a wool coat), take a note from Isabel Marant. A patent trench will offer you more warmth than its lightweight counterpart, without causing you to overheat.
LEGGINGS
Phoebe Philo shocked everyone last season by introducing something we thought was dead and gone: the legging. Céline stretchy pant were styled under dresses and skirts proving it's about time we embraced the cozy look.
FAUX FUR STOLES
Fur and faux fur stoles are making their way back in style thanks to designers like Monse. Drape them on the diagonal or attach it to your lapel as a cozy faux collar.
